“It’s a bit like the Fifty Shades effect,” says psychosexual therapist Krystal Woodbridge, speaking about the new Netflix show Sex Education. Instead of promoting an interest in whips and canes, however, this show brings to the fore problems that arise around sex — and the solutions provided by the sex-therapist character played by Gillian Anderson, as well as by her on-screen son (who doles them out to his peer group). “We’re seeing a huge amount of interest following the programme,” Woodbridge continues. “It is great that Sex Education is prompting people to talk about sexual issues, and to realise the value of therapy. Our clinics have been inundated.”
